Hi guys!
I hope you all had a good holiday break and that you were able to spend it with your loved ones! Although my family and I don't celebrate the holidays, it's always nice just to spend a few days off with them. This year my momma learned how to make tamales, and so we had family over and we all just ate tamales and menudo. It was definitely just a blessing to get to see my family and just spend some time together.
PS: I have decided that based on my hectic class schedule this semester, (I'm taking 5 classes and a lab!) I will be posting every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and either Saturday or Sunday. It will just depend on my homework load for that weekend. Sometimes I may even post on both Saturday and Sunday. I hope you guys will keep coming back to my blog and I also want to thank you guys for an amazing year. I have gotten so many amazing opportunities thanks to the amazing support I have gotten from everyone who decides to take a chance and take a look at my blog. It really means the world to me. I have added a new widget to my blog on the right hand side, where you can enter your email and be subscribed to my blog, so whenever I publish a new post, you guys get a notification in your email. Don't worry there won't be any spam, and you'll only get a notification when I post something new. Today I wanted to share with you guys a few tricks I learned during my first semester in college, in order to look cute everyday even when you didn't get much sleep, or you were running late that morning. I hope these help!
1. Stock up on Basics
Leggings, plain tees, plain long sleeves, nice fitting jeans, comfy shoes, and camis. You have absolutely no idea how much all of these come in handy. You can create so many outfits out of these simple basics, and the best part is that it's so easy to accessorize a pair of jeans a plain tee. Throw on a cute necklace or scarf, some sparkly flats or slip-ons, some quick makeup, and you're ready to go. I recommend you buy your leggings from Target, they're about $12, but they're so worth it. They're thick and stretchy, warm, and comfy. And they last forever! For jeans, I personally would pick up some jeggings from Forever 21. They're about $10, and they're seriously the most comfy pairs of pants I own. They look like jeans, but feel like leggings. Trust me, you'll be thankful you wore them after a 12 hour day. You can also pick up all your basic tees, camis, and long sleeves from Forever 21. They range from $1.80 to about $9.00 and they're really comfy and good quality.
2. Wear in your Shoes First
Trust me, you do not want to be the weird girl on campus who can't even walk from class to class, because her shoes are uncomfortable. I learned that lesson very quickly. I personally love the canvas slip-ons (TOM look a likes) that you can get from any Asian or Mexican Dollar Stores. You can get them super inexpensive, and most of them are under $10. I found a place that sold them for $5.00, so I stocked up on every color in my size. They're so easy to throw on with any outfit, and they're so comfy. If you choose to wear sandals for the warmer months or even wedges, just make sure you can walk in them, and that you won't fall in them. You also never want to be that girl. I suggest you stick to some comfy flats, or converse (that have also been worn in). They look cute, but you will save your feet from major pain at the end of the day.
3.Plan Out Your Outfit the Night Before or Even the Weekend Before
I cannot even begin to tell you guys what a time saver this is, but I know that it also sounds really weird and time consuming if you don't know what you're doing, but just think about it. Can you imagine how much more time you can sleep in in the morning if you already have your outfit picked out? You would simply get up, get dressed, and go. It's the simple. I personally like to plan out my outfits the weekend before, because for me, it helps coordinate them and make sure I don't wear anything too similar that week, but it also enures that your clothes are all clean, and not in the wash, so if you do happen to be looking for something specific one morning, you'll be able to for sure wear it because it's not dirty, but my top reason for planning my outfits out the week before, is because the outfits that I pick out are I guess what you would call a "rough draft," and if you don't like them, you have a whole week to change it up and style it differently. It has really helped me evolve in the styling process and not be so cookie cutter when it comes to putting together an outfit. To hang up your outfit or outfits, I suggest you a $10 rolling clothing rack from Target, to keep it all organized.
4. Keep it Simple
If you're not into planning out your outfits, and you don't really know what to wear one morning, go with this simple rule: KEEP IT SIMPLE. It's almost impossible to style a bad outfit if you're keeping it simple. I suggest something like a long basic tee with some black leggings and some Chucks. You can put your hair up or simply throw it in a messy side braid and you're good to go. If keeping it simple if your favorite style, than I suggest you pick up a cute pair of stud earrings you can throw on with any outfit and a small necklace that can also go with anything. Whenever I find a necklace I really like, I tend to pick it up in both gold and silver so I can wear it pretty much any day without worrying about the metals crashing. Remember, when keeping it simple, also keep your accessories simple.
5. Emergency Outfits
There is seriously no worse feeling than when you're running super late, and you remember that you have a presentation that day that requires a dress code. You seriously want to curl up in a ball because you have to decide whether to throw together an appropriate outfit and be late, or be on time and be dressed inappropriately. Luckily for you, if you follow this tip, that won't ever happen again. If you're taking a class that requires you to give presentations with dress codes, plan ahead. I suggest you find some nice pieces in your wardrobe that you could wear, and if it's something like a dress, find a slip to go under and a nice pair of heels you can walk in. If you choose to go the blouse and pencil skirt route, make sure your pencil skirt is long enough and it's not too tight. You also need to make sure that your blouse tucks into your skirt properly and that it coordinates nicely. Keep the blouse simple, but if you do go with a print, make sure it's a little more conservative. Again pick some nice heels that you can walk in. I will suggest that you try investing in some black or nude pumps, especially if you're going into business, because they will always come in handy. Keep the jewelry simple. Some pearl or diamond studs and a very tiny necklace will work well. I suggest that you take some flats with you and put them in your bag for when you get tired of your heels, because chances are you're going to have more classes in the day, and you want to be prepared.
6. Master the Topknot and Messy Side Braid
All this is is practice. You'd be surprised is how many times you'll use these super easy hairstyles throughout the semester. Learning to master them in under 60 seconds will save you MAJOR time. If you can master it artfully, you can even rock one of these hairstyles during a class presentation without it looking like you just didn't do your hair. I would stock up on tons on bobby pins and clear elastics, and keep some in your car just in case.
7. Find a Go To Makeup Look
If you're like me, you like to at least put some makeup on your face before leaving your face. Now, I know I don't need it, but I just like it, but unfortunately sometimes we don't have time to go all out with a smokey eye and winged eyeliner. This semester I was able to get my makeup routine down to about 5 minutes because I knew exactly what I was going to do, and I felt confident that I could do it in that time frame. My everyday makeup look consists of light foundation (BB cream works really well for long days), eyebrows, concealer, eyeliner, mascara, blush, and some kind of lip product. My biggest suggestion is to play around with your makeup and find a look that highlights your best features and then practice that look until you got it down. If you're going to be trying new products, I suggest you try them out the night before or the weekend before, there's nothing more annoying than when you have to remove your whole face of makeup because you didn't like that mascara or that concealer didn't work well. Just practice.
8. Be Confident
This is the only one of these that matters. Being confident is the most important thing in order to be able to wear whatever you want, but not only that, you won't be happy and comftorable in your own skin, until you love yourself. If you're not there yet, well then simply fake it till you make it.
